Tangier to the Sahara: From the Ferry to the Merzouga Dunes

Many travelers reach Morocco by ferry from Spain or fly into Tangier, then wonder how to get to the desert. The Sahara dunes are at the other end of the country, but the road there passes some of Morocco's most beautiful places. Here is the route our drivers take, how long it takes, and how to plan it.

Quick answer

How do you get from Tangier to the Sahara?

The best way is a private tour by road: Tangier to Chefchaouen, then Fes, then across the Middle Atlas to the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga. It is about 800 km, so plan at least 3 days to reach the desert, and 5 to 7 days if you continue to Marrakech. There is no direct train or flight to the dunes.

Arriving in Tangier

By ferry from Spain: fast ferries cross the Strait of Gibraltar from Tarifa to Tangier Ville port, in the city center, in about an hour. Ferries from Algeciras arrive at Tangier Med, a larger port about 45 km east of the city. Your driver can meet you at either port.

By plane: Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport is about 15 km from the center, with flights from many European cities.

We split these drives over several days, so you never spend a whole holiday in the car. Every stop on the way is worth a visit in itself.

Day by day: a typical route

Chefchaouen. Spend your first night in the blue city. Walk the painted lanes in the evening and the early morning, when it is quiet.

Fes. The oldest imperial city, with one of the largest car-free medinas in the world. A day with a licensed local guide is the best way to discover the tanneries, madrasas and souks.

The Middle Atlas. On the way south, you pass Ifrane, often called the "Switzerland of Morocco", and the cedar forest near Azrou, home to Barbary macaques.

Merzouga. Ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset and sleep in a desert camp under the stars. With two nights, you have a full day to explore the desert, meet nomad families and listen to Gnawa music.

To Marrakech. Most travelers continue west through the Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley and Ait Ben Haddou, crossing the High Atlas to Marrakech, so you never drive the same road twice.
