Morocco Photography Tours

Morocco is one of the most photogenic countries on earth: golden dunes, blue lanes, earthen kasbahs, spice souks and night skies full of stars. On a private tour, your schedule follows the light. We time each stop for sunrise and golden hour and stop wherever you see a shot.

Camel caravan crossing the Erg Chebbi dunes at golden hour, a highlight of Morocco photography tours
Quick answer

Where are the best places to photograph in Morocco?

The most photogenic places in Morocco are the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga at sunrise and sunset, the blue medina of Chefchaouen in the early morning, Ait Ben Haddou at golden hour, the Todra and Dades gorges, the tanneries and rooftops of Fes, Jemaa el-Fna in Marrakech at night and the harbor of Essaouira. Camel Ride Trips, a local team from Merzouga, plans private photography tours of 5 to 14 days timed around the best light, with flexible stops and extra nights in the desert.

The best photo locations in Morocco

  • Erg Chebbi, Merzouga: dunes up to about 150 meters high, camel caravans and very dark night skies.
  • Chefchaouen: blue lanes and doorways, best photographed early before the crowds.
  • Ait Ben Haddou: the earthen ksar glows at sunset from the hill across the river.
  • Todra and Dades gorges: high cliffs, winding roads and the Monkey Fingers rock formations.
  • Fes: the Chouara tanneries from the terraces and the rooftops of the old medina.
  • Marrakech: Jemaa el-Fna at dusk, the souks and Majorelle Garden.
  • Essaouira: blue fishing boats and the sea walls in the evening light.

How we plan a photography tour

We plan driving times so you arrive at key places at the right moment, and we add extra nights where the light is best, usually in the desert. Your driver-guide knows quiet viewpoints and will stop wherever you like.

Photographers often choose the 12-day luxury desert tour, which has two nights in the Sahara and ends on the coast in Essaouira, or the 14-day Morocco at Leisure for more time in each place.

Photography etiquette and rules

  • Always ask before photographing people. Some may say no, and some may expect a small tip.
  • Avoid photographing military sites, police and official buildings.
  • Drones are restricted in Morocco and can be confiscated at customs without authorization, so leave yours at home unless you have a permit.
  • Bring a dust cover or bag for your camera in the desert, as fine sand gets everywhere.

Questions About Morocco Photography Tours

When is the best light for photography in Morocco?

Sunrise and the hour before sunset. In the desert, golden hour is short and dramatic, so we plan the camel ride and dune walks around it.

Can I fly a drone in Morocco?

Drones are restricted and need authorization. Without a permit they can be confiscated at the airport, so we advise leaving them at home.

Is it OK to photograph people in Morocco?

Always ask first. Many people are happy to be photographed, some will say no, and some may expect a small tip.

Which tour is best for photography?

A tour with two nights in the Sahara, such as the 12-day luxury desert tour or the 5-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour, gives you more sunrises and sunsets in the dunes.

Can you stop whenever I want to take photos?

Yes. The tour is private, so your driver-guide stops wherever you see a good shot.
