Marrakech to Merzouga: 3, 4 or 5 Days?
Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, is the best place to see the real Sahara from Marrakech. But should you go for 3, 4 or 5 days? Our team lives next to the dunes in Rissani, and this is how we help guests choose.

Which Marrakech to Merzouga tour should I choose?
Choose 3 days if you are short on time and happy with long driving days. Choose 4 days for the same highlights with an easier return, which suits families and seniors. Choose 5 days for two nights in the desert and a full day around the dunes.
Why at least 3 days?
Merzouga is about 550 km from Marrakech, or 9 to 10 hours of driving without stops, across the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass. No good tour does it in one day. Every option below splits the drive with a night in the Dades Valley on the way out.

The 3-day tour: the classic
Day 1 crosses the High Atlas to Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley. Day 2 visits the Todra Gorge and ends with a sunset camel ride into the dunes and a night in a desert camp. Day 3 starts with sunrise over the Sahara and drives all the way back to Marrakech. It is our most popular trip because it shows the highlights in the shortest time, but the last day is long.

The 4-day tour: same highlights, easier pace
The route is almost the same, but the drive home is split in two with a night in Ouarzazate. You arrive in Marrakech rested, around midday. We recommend it for families with children, seniors and anyone who gets tired in the car.

The 5-day tour: two nights in the Sahara
This is the one we would choose for ourselves. After the camp night, you spend a full day around Erg Chebbi: the seasonal lake where flamingos sometimes stop, nomad families, black-stone desert and a Berber lunch, then a second night in a kasbah hotel facing the dunes. You see the desert at sunset and sunrise twice.

Not going back to Marrakech?
If you fly home from Fes, cross the desert one way and save the drive back: the 3-day, 4-day or 5-day Marrakech to Fes tours all include a night in the Merzouga dunes.
What about Zagora?
Zagora is closer, about 7 hours from Marrakech, and possible in 2 days. It has desert scenery and a camp, but only small dunes. If you dream of tall golden dunes, Merzouga is worth the extra day.
Tips from our desert team
- Best seasons: spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). Summer afternoons are very hot; winter nights in the desert are cold, but camps provide warm blankets.
- Pack light for the camp: a small bag with a warm layer, a scarf for the sun and sand, and a phone charger. Your main luggage stays in the car.
- Choose your camp level: every tour is available in Basic, Mid-Range or Luxury. Luxury tents have an en-suite bathroom.
