How Many Days Do You Need in Morocco?

It is the first question almost every traveler asks us. The honest answer: at least 7 days to see the cities and the Sahara without rushing, and 10 to 14 days for a relaxed trip. Here is how to choose, based on 12 years of planning private tours across Morocco.

Quick answer

How many days in Morocco is enough?

7 days is the minimum to combine Marrakech or Fes with a night in the Sahara. 10 days lets you add Chefchaouen and the imperial cities at an easy pace. 14 days covers the whole country, including the Atlantic coast, with two nights in most places. With only 3 to 5 days, choose one city plus a short desert trip.

Why Morocco takes longer than it looks on the map

Morocco is bigger than many travelers expect, and the most famous places are far apart. The Sahara dunes of Merzouga are about 550 km from Marrakech and 470 km from Fes, so you need at least 3 days to reach the desert and come back. Mountain roads like the Tizi n'Tichka pass are beautiful but slow.

RouteDistanceDriving time
Casablanca → Marrakechabout 240 km3 hours
Casablanca → Fesabout 290 km3.5 hours
Tangier → Chefchaouenabout 115 km2 hours
Chefchaouen → Fesabout 200 km4 hours
Fes → Merzougaabout 470 km7–8 hours with stops
Marrakech → Merzougaabout 550 km9–10 hours, usually split over 2 days

3 to 5 days: one city and the desert

With a short trip, do not try to see everything. Pick one base and add a desert trip.

7 days: the classic first trip

One week is enough for two imperial cities and the Sahara. A good route is Fes, the desert, the gorges and Ait Ben Haddou, ending in Marrakech, or the same in reverse.

10 days: the best balance

Ten days is what we recommend most. You see the blue city of Chefchaouen, Fes with a local guide, a night in the Sahara, the kasbahs of the south and Marrakech, and you still have time to rest.

12 to 14 days: Morocco without rushing

Two weeks lets you spend two nights in most places, add the Atlantic coast at Essaouira, and travel at a slow, comfortable pace. This is the best length for seniors, honeymooners and families.

How to choose: four questions

1. Where do you land? Casablanca has the most long-haul flights. Marrakech and Fes are better for European flights. Tangier is best if you come by ferry. Start where you land and, if possible, fly home from another city to avoid driving back.

2. Do you want the real Sahara? Then plan at least one night in Merzouga. Zagora is closer to Marrakech but has only small dunes.

3. What pace do you like? If you prefer fewer hours in the car, add days rather than places.

4. When are you traveling? Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are the most comfortable. In summer, the desert is very hot in the afternoon; in winter, desert nights are cold and the Atlas passes can have snow.

Our advice as a local team

Most of our guests who choose 10 days or more tell us it was the right decision. Morocco is a country to enjoy slowly: long breakfasts on a riad terrace, sunset on a dune, tea with a nomad family. Whatever your length, every tour can be adapted to you, with your choice of Basic, Mid-Range or Luxury hotels.
