Sahara Desert Tours in Morocco: The Complete 2026 Guide from a Merzouga Local

By Mohamed Amraoui · Merzouga, Morocco · Updated October 22, 2026

The short answer

A Sahara desert tour in Morocco takes you to the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga, the biggest and most visited sand sea in the country. From Marrakech you need at least 3 days, and 4 days is more comfortable. From Fes you need 2 days, from Casablanca 4 days and from Tangier 5 days. A private tour with Camel Ride Trips starts from €285 per person (2 days from Fes) and €445 per person (3 days from Marrakech), Mid-Range level, 2 travelers sharing.

I'm Mohamed Amraoui. I live in Merzouga, at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes, and I have organized desert trips since 2014. This guide answers every question our guests ask before they book: where to go, how many days, what it costs, which camp to choose, when to come and how to avoid bad operators.

Where do Sahara tours go in Morocco?

Morocco has three desert areas that tours visit. They are very different, so choose before you book.

My advice: for almost everyone, Merzouga is the right choice. It is the classic Sahara picture, it is easy to reach on paved roads and it sits between Marrakech and Fes, so you can do a one-way trip. Read the full comparison: Merzouga vs Zagora: which Sahara desert should you choose?

The honest truth about 3 days from Marrakech: it works, but it is a road trip first and a desert trip second. You spend 18–20 hours in the car and get one sunset and one sunrise in the dunes. Read our detailed guides: Is 3 days enough for the Sahara from Marrakech? and Marrakech to Merzouga: 3, 4 or 5 days?

A typical 3-day tour, day by day

Day 1: Marrakech to the Dades Valley

Pickup around 7:30 AM. You cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), visit the UNESCO-listed Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, pass Ouarzazate and follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades Valley for dinner and the night.

Day 2: Todra Gorge to the Merzouga dunes

Walk through the Todra Gorge, where the walls rise up to 300 m, then drive through Tinjdad and Erfoud to Merzouga. In the late afternoon you ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes, watch the sunset from a high dune and spend the night in a desert camp.

Day 3: Sunrise and return

Wake up for sunrise on the dunes, ride back for breakfast and a shower, then drive back to Marrakech through the Draa Valley, or north to Fes through the Ziz Valley, Midelt and the cedar forests of Ifrane.

How much does a Sahara desert tour cost?

Prices depend on four things: private or shared, the comfort level of hotels and camp, group size, and the season. These are our real starting prices for private tours, per person, Mid-Range level, with 2 travelers sharing.

Private tourFrom (per person)
2 days Fes to Merzouga€285

What changes the price:

Private vs shared: shared group tours in a minibus are cheaper, but you follow a fixed schedule with up to 16–17 people and sleep in a standard camp. On a trip with this much driving, a private vehicle that stops when you want makes a big difference. Our website offers private tours only. We also run shared departures on Viator for budget travelers.

Usually included: private air-conditioned vehicle, English-speaking driver-guide, hotels and desert camp, camel ride, breakfasts and dinners, pickup and drop-off.
Usually not included: lunches and drinks, monument entrance fees, tips, travel insurance.

If your tour has only one desert night, a Mid-Range or Luxury tent is worth it, especially from November to March when nights are cold. We book camps directly with partners we know personally. All travelers are welcome, and our partner camps don't ask questions about double or twin beds.

What to pack

How to book safely and avoid bad tours

  1. Book with a real local operator. Many websites only sell tours and pass you to someone else. Ask who your driver will be and where the company is based.
  2. Get everything in writing: itinerary, hotel names or level, camp level, meals and what is not included.
  3. Check real reviews on Tripadvisor and Viator, not only testimonials on the website.
  4. Don't pay everything in advance. A fair deposit is normal. With us, a 20% deposit confirms your trip and the balance is paid on the first day.
  5. Be careful with very cheap street offers in Marrakech. They often mean crowded minibuses, long shopping stops and basic camps far from the big dunes.
  6. Ask about the camp location. A good camp is inside the dunes, not at the edge of the road.

Sahara desert tours from Casablanca

From Casablanca, the shortest desert tour is 4 days. You drive about 290 km to Fes, then about 470 km to Merzouga, and finish in Marrakech through the Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley. Most travelers who land in Casablanca choose a 6 to 12-day tour that combines the desert with the imperial cities.

Amazing Morocco15Meknes, Chefchaouen, Fes, Merzouga, Imlil, Essaouira, Marrakech€2,435

My advice from Casablanca: with one week, choose the 7-day tour so you see Chefchaouen and Fes before the desert. With only 4 days, the desert is reachable, but the drives are long. We pick you up at Casablanca airport or your hotel, and tours can end in Marrakech or back in Casablanca to match your flight. See all tours from Casablanca.

Sahara desert tours from Tangier (and from Spain by ferry)

From Tangier, the shortest desert tour is 5 days: Chefchaouen, Fes, a night in the Merzouga dunes, the Dades Valley and Marrakech. You reach the dunes on day 3 or 4. Travelers coming from Spain take the ferry from Tarifa or Algeciras (about 1 hour), and we meet them at the port the same day.

My advice from Tangier: the 7-day tour is the best balance. It gives you a full guided day in Fes and two nights in the desert, so the drives feel easy. Pickup is at Tangier Med or Tangier Ville port, Tangier airport or your hotel. Read our guide to Tangier and the Sahara by ferry and see all tours from Tangier.
