Merzouga vs Zagora: Which Sahara Desert Should You Choose?

By Mohamed Amraoui · Merzouga, Morocco · Updated October 22, 2026

The short answer

Choose Merzouga if you want the real Sahara: huge golden dunes up to 150 m high, a sunset camel ride and a camp deep in the sand. Choose Zagora only if you have just 2 days from Marrakech, because its desert is mostly rocky with small dunes.

I'm Mohamed Amraoui. I live in Merzouga and I have organized tours to both deserts since 2014. Many of our guests first went to Zagora, then came back to Morocco to see Merzouga. This guide helps you choose right the first time.

Why Merzouga is the real Sahara experience

The Erg Chebbi dunes start right at the edge of Merzouga village and stretch about 22 km. When you ride a camel here, you see only sand in every direction. At sunset the dunes turn orange, then red, and at night the sky has no city light at all.

Merzouga also has the best desert camps in Morocco, from simple Berber tents to luxury camps with private bathrooms and hot showers. And you can stay longer: sandboarding, a 4x4 tour around the dunes, tea with a nomad family, or Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia.

The only downside is distance. From Marrakech you need at least 3 days. Read our honest guide: Is 3 days enough for the Sahara from Marrakech?

When Zagora makes sense

Zagora is a good choice when time is very short. The 2-day trip from Marrakech crosses the High Atlas, stops at the UNESCO kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou and follows the Draa Valley, one of the longest palm groves in Morocco. You ride a camel at sunset and sleep one night in a desert camp.

But please know what to expect: Zagora is not the sand sea you see in photos. It is a stony desert with small dunes around the camps. Travelers who expect big dunes are often disappointed.

If you want big dunes near Zagora, there is Erg Chigaga, about 2 hours beyond Zagora by 4x4 track. It is wild and remote, but it needs at least 3–4 days from Marrakech, about the same as Merzouga.

My advice as a local: if you can find one more day, choose Merzouga. Travelers almost never regret it.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Merzouga or Zagora?

Merzouga is better for most travelers. Its Erg Chebbi dunes rise up to about 150 m and look like the classic Sahara. Zagora is better only if you have just 2 days from Marrakech.

Does Zagora have big sand dunes?

No. Zagora is mostly rocky desert with small dunes around the camps. For big dunes you need Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) or Erg Chigaga, which is about 2 hours beyond Zagora by 4x4.

How far is Zagora from Marrakech?

About 360 km, or 6 to 7 hours of driving with stops, via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley.

How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?

About 560 km, or 9 to 10 hours of driving. Most tours split the drive over 2 days, so the minimum trip is 3 days.

Can I visit Merzouga from Fes?

Yes. Merzouga is about 470 km from Fes, around 7 to 8 hours by road, so a 2-day or 3-day tour from Fes works well. Zagora is too far from Fes for a short trip.

Is a 2-day Zagora tour worth it?

Yes, if you only have 2 days. You see the High Atlas, Aït Ben Haddou, the Draa Valley palm groves and a night in a desert camp, but not the big Sahara dunes.

Which desert is better for families?

Zagora is easier for very young children because the trip is shorter. For older children, Merzouga is worth the extra day for the big dunes, sandboarding and 4x4 activities.
